Genesee 16, Wales 6 (Game 1)
Genesee 5, Wales 4; 10 Inn. (Game 2)
WALES GENESEE – When the Genesee Rebels arrived in Wales on Sunday afternoon for a scheduled double header, they found a field that was literally unplayable. The outfield lines were not painted and the hay field that was the outfield grass was so long that if Joe Ellifson were still roaming centerfield, only his hat would have been visible. After a discussion with the umpires, it was decided that the games (and concessions) would be moved to Genesee. The Town of Wales should be charged with larceny for making the Royals pay good money for that embarrassment.
Once Game 1 finally got going, the 'visiting' Rebels jumped on the Royals immediately. RF Jim Szajna walked with one out and after a pop up to the catcher for the second out, 1B Chris Elliott singled. DH Mark Wershay then lined a fastball to the right center field gap for a 2RBI double. The Royals came back with a run in the bottom of the first without the benefit of a hit. Three walks and a fielder’s choice plated the run. RHP Matt DeMarais was all around the plate, but apparently not over it. The Rebels second looked like it may be a big inning when newcomer 3B Kyle Stasik led off with a double and 2B Brian Szajna followed with a single. However, Szajna was cut down trying to steal second and C Nick Heckenkamp struck out. After a walk to CF Matt Bauer, Jim Szajna’s opposite field double scored Stasik to make it 3-1.
Heckenkamp scored a run in the fourth to increase the Rebels lead to 4-1.In the bottom of the fourth, the Royals rallied to tie the game at four. 2B Brian Artymiuk had the big hit that inning connecting on a two-run home run to left field. The Szajna brothers came through in fifth as Jim knocked in a run on his second double of the day and Brian plated two with a line drive down the third base line.
In the top of the seventh, RBI hits from SS Keith McFarlane, Stasik, 2B Brad Wiskowski and a couple of errors led to seven runs and an insurmountable 16-6 lead for the Rebels. Stasik led the offensive attack in Game 1 going a perfect 4 for 4 (3x2B) with 2R and two RBI. Jim Szajna was 3 for 5 with two doubles and two RBI.
Matt DeMarais (2-0) settled down after a rough first inning, walking none and allowing just two more earned runs on the Artymiuk home run. DeMarias went five innings and struck out six.
Game 2 was a completely different game as both starters, Marcus Perleberg for Wales and Jim Szajna for the Rebels kept runs to a premium. Wales jumped on the board with an unearned run in the bottom of the second. The Rebels tied the game in the top of the third on a sac fly by Bauer after consecutive singles by LF Chris Theisen, Brian Szajna and Heckenkamp loaded the bases. A ground out and a fly out ended the Rebels threat.
The Rebels went up 2-1 in the fifth when Brian Szajna scored an unearned run on a throwing error. Royals C John Dobson tied the game at two with an opposite field double in the sixth. Rookie OF/P Theisen should have been the hero as he came up with a huge two out, 2RBI single in the top of the eighth. Unfortunately a couple of close calls at first did not go in the Rebels favor and the Royals managed to tie the score. Only a perfect 9-3-2 (Szajna-Elliott-Heckenkamp) putout at the plate saved the Rebels from a walk-off loss at their own park. Elliott would come up huge for the Rebels two innings later when his lead-off hustle double forced a throwing error at second allowing him to take third. Elliott scored a couple of pitches later on a wild pitch. RHP Joel Meier worked around an error in the tenth inning to earn the victory.
Theisen was 2 for 4 with a walk and Brian Szajna was 3 for 5 with a run scored, accounting for half of the Rebels hits. Jim Szajna went six strong innings allowing just one earned run on six hits. Szajna struck out three and walked one.
C Nick Heckenkamp was the MVP, catching all seventeen innings and taking a couple of hard shots on plays at the plate. The Rebels had three put outs at home on the day.
A scheduling conflict with East Troy’s field will see the teams flip home dates the next two weeks. The Rebels will travel to East Troy this Sunday (May 20th) for a 1:30 tilt. The Express will visit Genesee on the 27th. Game time is slated for 1:30.
